If you ever see a craft event Lowther Castle and Gardens or Askham Hall whilst staying in Cumbria please do take the time to visit. Today we visited Lowther (around 40 mins from #Carlisle) where they had on an Etsy #Cumbria event, having previously been to similar things at Christmas I was expecting good things and wasn’t let down.
The setting is absolutely stunning setting (think Narnia’s Cair Paravel meets the Lake District), set in acres of sprawling countryside. Nearby Askham is just the prettiest village and home to sister property Askham Hall (which I will cover soon). There is a river, woods and hilly animal pastures grazing livestock owned by the estate provided home reared meat produce.
The Etsy Cumbria event had around 30 stalls from local producers showcase their products with items ranging from clothing and art, to plants and furniture. The most interesting stalls I came across was Patience & Gough Furniture, a really attractive array of upcyled furniture, the standard of which I’ve never seen before. Showstopper pieces that you could base a whole room on, the young couple have perfected a way of applying fabrics to furniture to amazing effect.
The cafe is also really good, with Sunday roasts being served alongside sandwiches and indulgent cakes and scones. Home grown produce is used where possible and the quality is far greater than you expect in what Is essentially a tourist attraction.
The Castle also boasts an amazing children’s playground the Lost Castle which little people will want to visit again and again.
Try parking at Askham and walking to the castle and back or vice versa to make a day out of it visiting both venues. There are a number of woodland and riverside walks and Bikes can also be hired at the Castle.
Regular events are scheduled at these well run properties, keep an eye on the events calendars to plan your visits to take advantage of all that’s going on.
